The organisers of the inaugural World Choral Conducting Competition, which takes place in parallel with the 2019 World Youth & Children’s Choir Festival, will welcome 3000 participants from 39 countries and regions from 12-17 July 2019 in Hong Kong.
Presented by the World Youth and Children’s Choral Artists’ Association, the combined festival and competition features a rich tapestry of performances, masterclasses and workshops at venues across Hong Kong, with an internationally renowned faculty of adjudicators and choral educators.
The resident artists are The King’s Singers, Utopia & Reality Chamber Choir and Hamilton Children’s Choir, who will be joined by nearly 60 international and Hong Kong choirs.
The 12 finalists of the World Choral Conducting Competition come from France, the UK, Lithuania, Germany, Australia, Turkey, Italy/Slovenia, South Korea, Hong Kong and Russia, and are competing for cash awards of HK$125,000 (£12,500/US$16,000). The Competition Champion will also win a concert engagement with the Slovenian Philharmonic Choir. The jury will be chaired by Professor Péter Erdei, formerly Director General of the Kodály Institute and Professor of Choral Conducting at the Liszt Academy of Music in Hungary.
Professor Leon Shiu-wai Tong, Artistic Director and President of the Organising Committee of the events, said:
‘I am sincerely grateful for the support from the Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau, China Chorus Association, UNESCO Hong Kong Association, the honourable consulates, Hong Kong Tourism Board, and Brand Hong Kong.
