The new Choral Celebrations series will welcome registrations from singers, ensembles, and choirs who will be performing Handel’s Coronation Anthems in the Grand Hall of Philharmonie Berlin under the direction of the renowned choral conductor Simon Carrington.
The Philharmonie Berlin is one of the world’s most famous concert halls and has been the musical heart of Berlin since 1963. Written in 1727 for the lavish coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline in Westminster Abbey in London, Handel’s Coronation Anthems were composed to match the grandeur of the occasion. Zadok the Priest is the best known of the set and has been heard at each successive coronation of a British King or Queen since 1727.
Simon Carrington is a choral conductor, clinician, consultant, and Yale University Professor Emeritus who has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in music. He is known as the creative force and co-founder of the internationally acclaimed The King’s Singers, being involved in 3,000 performances at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals and concert halls and with whom he made more than seventy recordings.
The Choral Celebrations series offers three opportunities for participation. Singers and choirs will have the opportunity to sing Handel’s Coronation Anthems within the main programme and as the event’s highlight. Choirs and vocal ensembles may additionally choose to sing in a Fringe Program, which includes choir-to-choir performances in some of Berlin’s most beautiful venues. Finally, select choirs and vocal ensembles may hold Solo Showcases at the Philharmonie Berlin, an opportunity available only by invitation of the series’ Artistic Director.
Registrations are now possible online for singers and choirs & ensembles. You can view more information by downloading the Choral Celebrations brochure (versions in English and German) or visiting the official website.
