About the course
Presented by Oundle for Organists (OfO), Pulling Out the Stops (POTS) is an online course for beginner organists up to and including Grade 5, and those who are interested in finding out more about the organ.

Here is what POTS 2021 has in store for you:
Daniel Moult (Head of Organ at Birmingham Conservatoire) and Tom Bell (Director, RCO North) will be joining Ann Elise Smoot (Director, OfO) in presenting much of the course content.
Daniel, Tom, and Ann Elise will run livestream sessions, followed by online Q and A sessions, on the following topics:
- Making music at the organ
- Basic improvisation
- Building a technique
- Keyboard skills
In addition, we will have a presentation by Andrew Scott, Head Voicer of Harrison and Harrison, on how organs work. And on both days we will ‘Start the Day with Music’, with livestreamed performances by Richard Pinel, Director of Music at Jesus College, Cambridge.
Richard is going to give you lots of information on Oxbridge organ scholarships, which some of you may someday be interested in. Daniel Moult is going to be doing exactly the same thing on attending UK Conservatoires. Both will be answering questions and giving information on what to expect at auditions, the benefits of both experiences, and how to prepare. It’s never too early to learn about these options!
Daniel, Tom, Richard, and Andrew have all been popular, enthusiastic tutors and presenters on recent POTS course in the past, and we feel sure that you will really enjoy these sessions!
The fee for POTS this year will be £45, which will gain you access to all course content, as well as the year round support that comes with being part of the OfO family. We really do encourage our students to be in touch with us once the courses have finished if they need advice or support on anything to do with their organ studies. It’s what we’re here for.
Oundle for Organists reserves the right to alter course content, including tutors, should the need arise.

Tom Bell’s playing has been described as ‘invigorating’ (Sunday Times), ‘compelling’ (Organists’ Review) and ‘brilliant’ (American Record Guide).
Based in the UK, Tom has built a vibrant international portfolio of work as performer and educator. Recent engagements have taken him to Europe, Singapore, the United States and Australia. Tom is known as an innovative collaborator, having worked with beatboxers, visual artists, poets, folk musicians and dancers, and his work has been broadcast worldwide. He gave one of the reopening concerts on the organ at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 2014.
Current and forthcoming projects involve music by Olivier Messiaen, and nineteenth century editions of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. His educational activities are centred on his work as a Director of the Royal College of Organists, and he is at ease leading workshops for small children, or teaching the next generation of professional musicians.
His students have held prestigious scholarships and positions in the UK, and Tom has given masterclasses in Australia, Singapore and the USA. Tom is Artistic Director of the London Organ Day, studied with Kevin Bowyer at the Royal Northern College of Music, and lives in the north of England. tombell-organist.net
Daniel Moult, ‘one of the finest organists of our time’ (The Organ), is an acclaimed concert organist, recording artist and organ tutor. His musicianship has been praised as ‘exhilarating’ (Gramophone), ‘dazzling’ (The Organ), and ‘formidable’ (Organists’ Review).
Based in London, he is the Head of Organ at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and leads masterclasses, workshops and courses around the world. As a soloist, Daniel performs regularly throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia. He has pioneered the use of film as a means of promoting organ music, and has presented and performed in two DVD releases. He has also appeared as a soloist and ensemble player on many CDs, including a performance of one of Handel’s organ concerti and other pieces on Signum Classics, Handel at Vauxhall.
Daniel was born in Manchester and studied at Oxford University and the Amsterdam Conservatorium. He has published several editions, including two organ albums with Bärenreiter. Richard Pinel is a Fellow and the Director of Music at Jesus College, Cambridge and Director of the Edington Festival of Music within the Liturgy. Prior to this he was Assistant Director of Music at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. He previously held the organ scholarship at St Albans Cathedral.
Hailing from Northampton, Richard was awarded the organ scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford in 2002. During this time, the Grammy-nominated college choir undertook several recording projects with Harmonia Mundi, on which Richard’s playing was hailed as ‘a force of nature’. More recently, Richard has enjoyed competition success, winning the First Prize and both special prizes at the Breda International Organ Competition. Richard has taught for the RCO and tutored for Oundle for Organists.
His CD, L’Orgue Symphonique, has been praised for its ‘electrifying impact’ and ‘truly tremendous verve’. Recitals have taken him across the UK, notably King’s College, Cambridge and St John’s, Smith Square and further afield to Europe and the USA.
Andrew Scott joined Harrison & Harrison as an apprentice in 1994. At an early stage he took an interest in tuning and voicing, and began to work closely with Peter Hopps and Duncan Mathews. In 2000 at the age of 22 he succeeded David Chapman as London Tuner. In addition to his tuning, Andrew continued working as a voicer, playing a significant role alongside Peter and Duncan in projects such as Stockholm City Hall, St Mary Redcliffe, St Edmundsbury Cathedral and Westminster Central Hall.
Andrew was appointed Head Voicer in April 2012. Since taking up the role he has been responsible for the musical success of many projects, including the Royal Festival Hall, Exeter Cathedral and King’s College, Cambridge, together with new organs for Edington Priory, Hakadal Kirke, Norway, Frogner Kirke, Oslo, St Andrew’s Church, Bedford and Canterbury Cathedral. He became a director of H&H in 2017. In addition to his work at H & H, Andrew is an accomplished organist and choir trainer, currently holding the posts of Director of Music at St Michael & All Angels, Croydon, and Director of the chamber choir, Amici Coro.
Ann Elise Smoot
Ann Elise Smoot performs throughout the United States, Great Britain and Europe, with a repertoire that ranges from the 14th century to the present day. Her recital career was launched by success in major competitions and she has received wide critical acclaim for her ability to move between musical eras, styles and genres with sympathy and flair.
After completing two degrees at Yale, where she won several prizes for scholarship and for organ playing, she moved to England, where she studied organ and harpsichord at the Royal Academy of Music, and privately with Peter Hurford and Dame Gillian Weir. Education has also been a major focus of her career. Ann Elise was a Professor of Organ at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and for 15 years was director of the St. Giles Junior Organ Conservatoire, a unique and highly successful programme for teenage organists, preparing them for university organ scholarships and places in major conservatoires. She was also the Education Editor of The Organists’ Review magazine from 2011-2015. In 2014 she became the Director of Oundle for Organists. Ann Elise is Chair of the Dr Martin Clarke Young Organ Scholars Trust and a frequent examiner for the Royal College of Organists. Three critically acclaimed recordings have been issued on the JAV label.
